Women' Strength-Training - Exercises for Women and Misconceptions

This is a very common question I get asked by women who want to improve their bodies through changing body composition (women who want to lose body fat or/and gain muscle tissue), or get in shape and be strong for performing better in a specific sports and confront everyday tasks.

But women seeking strength-training sometimes have concerns regarding this issue and how to go about it. Womens concern can be summarized in few words; women who are seeking strength-training dont want to be bulky and muscular like men, period.

You know like those weightlifters or bodybuilders physique, most women want to firm up their bodies, tone their arms and lose some body fat but still maintain their feminine sexy look.

A very small percentage of women who have a full-time job as professional bodybuilders and practice strength-training for the sole purpose of getting big and very lean through training many hours a day in addition to using performance-enhancing supplements/drugs.

Women performing strength-training naturally should not fear getting huge or bulky like men for a valid reason that the majority of women have lower levels of testosterone than men.

So, the rest of the womens population who want to get in shape through utilizing strength training should relax and start performing strength-training to get the health benefits of strength-training.

Strength Training Benefits For Women

Women can gain many benefits from performing strength-training, herere some:

1-Strengthening and increasing bone density which can minimize the loss of your bone density as you age. You see, the bones are a living organism like your muscles, and theyll adapt and strengthened like any other organism in the body so the more resistance and impact your bones go through the more calcium and other substances they need to build to healthier bones.

2-Women doing strength-training and who want to bear children in the future can benefit from strengthening the pelvic-girdle muscles and the adductor and abductor thigh muscles.

3-Women can gain a lot of self-confidence being strong for daily challenges and look darn good too, especially living in a culture which is usually dominated by men in many aspects of life.

4-Women who perform strength-training the right way can improve the health and look of their posture in our ever increasing sedentary lifestyle and limited motions.

Womens Strength-TrainingShould it be Different than Men?

Some fitness experts recommend that women should perform higher repetitions and maybe more sets because of some physiological differences (hormones profile and neuromuscular activation levels).

So for example, if men are needed to perform between 8-12 repetitions for gaining muscle size, women maybe can benefit with 10-14 reps. Other than that, women should perform strength-training like men and they can gain the same benefits as men do.

But weight training for women should also change every few weeks by performing strength, muscle hypertrophy, and explosive (plyometric) routine in order for women to progress in strength training.

Another concern of women who wan to perform strength-training is this; women are higher in sports related-injuries because of their Anatomical and Biomechanical gender differences.

I have not seen any data indicating that women are generally more susceptible to weight-training related injuries. We need to take this myth of the frail, fragile woman out to the curb!

However, in recent years we have noted an increase in the anterior cruciate ligament (also called the ACL) injuries in female athletes. This may indicate that women may be more prone to ACL injury because of the configuration of their hips and legs or simply those women are now more active and thus the chance of injury is increased.

This is yet another good reason to utilize strength training. Strengthening the leg muscles, especially the vastus medialis, will improve knee stability and thus reduce the risk of sport injuries to the knees

Womens Strength-training and Exercise selections

I think women should let go of the obsessive use of machines (especially the adductor and abductor machines) and perform more free weights, more compound (multi-joints) exercises, like and not limited to:

-Free Weight Squats (not the Smith machine)

-Deadlifts

-Pull-ups and Chin-ups

-Snatch (all kinds)

-Push-ups and bench press

-Push press

-Dips (all kinds)

-Lunges (all kinds and using weights)

-Power cleans

If youre not familiar with some or all the above exercises then invest some time (and maybe money) to learn how to perform these excellent and effective exercises for burning body fat and, gaining muscle size and strength; which all can translate to firmer arms, thighs, butt and so on.

What is Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is a branch of herbal medicine that uses the medicinal properties of the essential oils of plants and herbs. Aromatherapy is derived from the ancient practice of using natural plant essences to promote health and wellbeing. The use of plant essential oils dates back to the ancient times in Egypt, Italy, India, and China. Aromatherapy can be defined as the art and science of utilizing naturally extracted aromatic essences from plants to balance, harmonize and promote the health of body, mind and spirit. It is an art and science which seeks to explore the physiological, psychological and spiritual realm of the individual's response to aromatic extracts as well as to observe and enhance the individual's innate healing process. Aromatherapy massage is particularly suited to conditions involving stress or improving emotionally-related conditions. Aromatherapy is one of the fastest growing fields in alternative medicine.

Aromatherapy can be used for treatments from acne (Rosemary and Geranium) and other skin problems. Aromatherapy is widely used at home, clinics and hospitals for a variety of applications such as pain relief for women in labor pain, relieving pain caused by the side effects of the chemotherapy undergone by the cancer patients, and rehabilitation of cardiac patients. Aromatherapy has been traced back to the most ancient healing ceremonies, where patients were smoked to rid them of evil spirits. When using good quality essential oils correctly, the soothing combination of beautiful aromas, massage, aromatic baths and other treatments all work to regulate, balance, heal and maintain your entire being by working with nature, and not against it. Aromatherapy is relatively easy to practice at home as we now have almost unlimited access to oils, candles, bath oils, diffusers and burners on the high street.

Aromatherapy is already slowly getting into the mainstream. There are many candles and bath oils which claim to be 'aromatherapy'; many of these contain synthetic oils, not essential oils, and may not be as beneficial. It is important to know something about how essential oils are extracted because oils from the same plant extracted in different ways can result in very different products. The two main ways to extract an essential oil from a plant are steam distillation and expression. Newer extraction methods such as supercritical CO2 extraction are also becoming more common. Aromatherapy oils can have side-effects nausea, headaches or an allergic reaction for instance. Always keep the oils in tightly-sealed containers stored in a cool dark place. Like all medicines, they should be kept out of the reach of children.

Worksite Wellness

Employers increasingly are realizing the value that worksite wellness programs deliver as an effective tool to improve employee health, increase productivity, reduce absenteeism and lower health care costs.

A 2003 report published by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) highlighted how important it is for employers to incorporate health promotion as part of their business strategy. The report asserts that preventable diseases place a heavy toll on business, including lower productivity and higher health insurance costs.

The HHS estimates that $1.66 trillion was spent on health care in 2003. and it attributes a majority of those costs to chronic diseases and conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, obesity and asthma. Sadly, the money allocated for preventing or controlling these conditions is negligible.

In a recent article, American Cancer Society CEO John Seffrin reported two thirds of cancer deaths in the United States could be prevented through lifestyle changes in diet, exercise, cancer screening and especially tobacco use. A well-designed worksite wellness program, provided by your health benefits company, serves the best interests of both employer and employee.

Bottom line return on investment

Ron Goetzel, a nationally recognized expert in the field of health management, data analysis and applied research, said in a recent interview that with an investment of $100 to $150 per employee per year in health promotion, an employer can expect an average return on investment of approximately $3 for every $1 invested ($300 to $450 savings per employee per year).

Goetzel says, however, that these returns are not typically realized until two to three years into the wellness program.

Legislative incentives

Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) has been an outspoken proponent in seeking legislative solutions for a strained health care system.

As a nation, we have a sick care system that is focused on helping people after they get sick, rather than a health care system which focuses on keeping healthy people healthy, he says.

Harkin introduced the Healthy Lifestyle and Prevention (HeLP) America Act of 2004. One of the initiatives under Title II - Healthier Communities and Workplaces, provides tax credits to businesses that offer comprehensive programs to promote employee health and grants for small business.

Worksite wellness, getting started

Implementing a worksite wellness program with your health insurance carrier can be accomplished with simple, low-cost strategies.

Offer incentives for participation.

Create a wellness campaign.

Schedule seminars on nutrition, diabetes and cholesterol.

Establish programs such as fitness, sleep diary, smoking cessation and injury prevention.

Offer chair massages or simple stretching exercises to do at the desk.

Change vending machine options to offer healthier, low-fat snacks and drinks.

Work with a health insurance carrier that can implement, manage and maintain your program. Actively promote employee participation.

A successful worksite wellness program can boost company morale, enhance productivity, reduce organizational conflict, attract superior workers and lower the rate of employee turnover. The case for establishing a worksite wellness program is well worth the effort.

Rebuild & Keep Good Credit Ratings by Understanding Your Credit Cards

Secured Credit Card is similar to a prepaid credit card since the funds you are using are actually yours and not the issuer of the credit card. Generally people who apply for secured credit card or prepaid credit card are people with poor credit or unemployed. Prepaid Credit Card spending limit is the amount of money you loaded to the card. There are no interest or finance charges on a prepaid card. With secured credit card, your credit line could be from 50% to 100% of your deposit depending on the institution giving you the secured credit. Therefore the company giving you the secured credit card has zero risk.

Secured credit card can be very beneficial because it gives you an opportunity to rebuild your credit history and you are able to make purchases just as if you had an unsecured credit card. Many companies require that you have a credit card to make purchases, such as car rental, airline tickets, etc. Ensure that the company issuing the secured credit, routinely reports customers' payment history to any of the three main credit bureaus namely Experian, Equifax and Trans Union. This reporting to the credit bureaus will rebuild your credit history over time.

Closing unnecessary accounts and consolidating your bills to make payments more manageable could be an advantage financially. By not applying for too much credit within a short period of time is another factor that will help in rebuilding your credit rating. Additionally, even though secured credit is like prepaid cards, they do have certain fees attached. Benefits are similar to that of an unsecured credit card, such as usually being paid interest on your balance in the bank, using Automated Teller Machines (ATM) to make deposits, withdrawals, and making purchases at participating merchants. Following the above steps will strengthen your credit rating.

Unsecured Credit Cards are issued to individuals with good to excellent credit rating. Credit ratings depend on certain criteria, such as one's ability to repay loans. These criteria include payment history, employment history, and financial stability. Individuals with excellent credit will most likely receive a lower interest rate. A major factor in maintaining excellent credit is making your loan payments on time thus avoiding late fee penalties.

Customers should read the credit agreement to ensure that they understand their obligation to the creditor. Making payments on time will strengthen your credit rating. Unsecured credit cards has numerous advantages such as low interest rates, high credit limit, business name options, no annual fees, and low APRs on balance transfers up to 12 months. Closing unnecessary accounts and consolidating your bills to make payments more manageable could be an advantage financially. By not applying for too much credit within a short period of time is another factor that will help in maintaining a good credit rating.

Rebuilding your credit takes time, patience, and consistency. If you consistently pay your bills on time, you will see an improvement in your credit ratings over time. There are no quick fixes for improving your credit report except for mistakes or inaccuracies that can be corrected, hopefully in your favor. Your credit information is maintained by the credit bureaus namely Experience, Equifax, and Trans Union for seven years. Therefore poor credit information will remain on your report for seven years. The good thing is that as negative information disappears with positive information, this will definitely rebuild your credit rating.

Dish Network vs Direct TV - Which is Best?

Id finally had enough of cable after their last service hike. It was time to join the masses of satisfied satellite customers and make the big switch.

But, which one to choose? After all, Id been a tried-and-true cable buyer for so long; I had no idea which satellite provider was best.

Oh, just pick one, my neighbor told me. Theyre all the same.

That couldnt be right, I thought.

Or could it?

So I began a month-long saga of satellite TV research, comparing Dish Network vs Direct TV every which way until I knew every last detail about each service.

Much to my familys despair, I was determined to find out everything I could about the satellite providers available, and make an informed consumer choice.

And the problem is, most sites that pretend to tell where to find the best deals are just plain awful.

Now, I did find three that were worthwhile. To find out which ones those are, you have to scroll down to the bottom of this story where youll find the links.

The good news, of course, is that there are only two companies to choose from Dish Network and Direct TV. Considering how hard it was to find many differences between the two (and ultimately decide which one was best), I sure was glad there werent others.

My first concern was whether or not I could use both companies where I live. That wasnt a problem for me, but a friend was told that Direct TV could not provide a signal in his neighborhood due to some large oak trees in the neighbors yard which interfered with their signal. But, he told me, since the signal from Dish Network came from the opposite direction (go figure), he was able to sign on with them making his decision easier than mine.

Next, I looked at service.

Both companies provided about the same level of service for relatively the same price. Packages for both Dish Network and Direct TV begin at about $19.99 a month, with their most useful family packages ranging around $50-$60.

I did find that Direct TV offered more comprehensive sports packages, including the NFL Sunday Ticket (hooray!), as well as packages covering all of the major college and professional sports teams. They also sport fewer blackout dates in many of the big cities like Philadelphia, making their packages well worth the extra money.

While Direct TV also offers other less-popular international sports such as cricket, rugby and soccer, Dish Network tends to concentrate more on the international sports coverage, according to many of the people I talked to.

One of the things that stood out among the Dish network programming seemed to be their variety of Latino and International channels and shows. For those looking for non-American (non-English) programming, Dish might be the way to go.

Since both companies offered all-digital packages, loads of high definition channels and plenty of individual packages to choose from, my next concern was in regards to set-up fees and installation.

Its true that both providers officially charge for equipment and installation, however, unless youre the kind of person who walks onto a car lot and just pays sticker price, you shouldnt ever have to pay for this.

Both Dish Network and Direct TV continually offer a variety of promotions and specials for first-time users that provide basic installation and equipment for free, in addition to a myriad of coupons and gift certificates that can be redeemed for additional equipment and/or services including 1-3 months of free service; free pay-per-view movies; channel upgrades and more.

Where do you find these deals?

Again, you really have to go down to the bottom of this story and click on those links! Theyll save you a ton of time!

So, on to the million dollar question: which service is better?

Believe it or not, after all that research I came away convinced that neither service outranks the other in more than a few small areas. Both offer between 180-250 channels, a variety of comprehensive sports packages (although Direct TV seems to provide more professional sports game options for the all-around sports lover), 100% all-digital and High Definition packages. And they do this for relatively the same price.

In the end, I chose Direct TV simply because they offered the NFL Sunday Ticket and Dish didnt. Boy, am I glad I did!

As promised, Direct TV has given my family more than 250 channels to choose from, loads of sporting events, music concerts and pay-per-view movies. Weve never enjoyed such a crystal clear picture before, and I am happy to report that weve only lost our signal once, and that was during a major snow storm last winter that ended up knocking out the electricity, so we wouldnt have been able to watch TV anyway.

And, by the time the electricity came back on, so did our satellite signal! (Our neighbors with cable werent so lucky their signal was out for three days. Hah!)

Am I glad I ditched cable? You bet I am! I have a clearer picture, more channels to choose from and hassle free service, all for a fraction of the cost!

Dont forget to check out the three sites below to make sure youre always up to date on the best deals.

If you want to save money and get the best deal on your Dish Network or Direct TV service, here are the only three sites you need to know: Dish Network vs Direct TV on Hubpages; Dish Network vs Direct TV on DigitalTVDojo; and that same site's Dish Network vs Direct TV blog. You can thank me later.
